SmartMove 2.4.2 Released

SmartMove 2.4.2 is released GA. It includes the following great new features as well as performance improvements. This feature also describes the planned product roadmap.

New Features in SmartMove v2.4.2

  • Command Line Interface, enabling pre configured SmartMove jobs (migrate and unmigrate) to be started, stopped and their status checked from an external interface.
  • SNMP Traps, broadcasting Server and Job Status information in a format that is suitable for capture and display by standard Network Monitoring applications.

SmartMove Product Roadmap

The SmartMove 242 release is expected to meet the user requirements into the immediate future. Within this release we have included early adoption of the Windows 2008 Server symbolic link support. We understand that many environments will not be in a position to take advantage of this solution at this time, but it will enable users to plan for the future now with the secure knowledge that the technology is there waiting to be used.

This approach has been taken as we are about to start a major redevelopment of the SmartMove product, to integrate the tiered management functionality seen in SmartMove into our PARS archiving product line. This development is expected to take an estimated 2 years but there are many advantages that will be made available upon completion.

Advantages

  • The SmartMove scanning, migration and policy engine is to be reengineered to provide better performance and flexibility. Building upon our many years of experience of archiving and tiered storage management, we understand the current issues today and we are aware that these issues are likely to grow in the future. The future obstacles are likely to be beyond the current design of the SmartMove engine and therefore action is needed to be taken now.
  • The PARS application structure provides a full modular design, enabling simple or complex archive solutions to be offered within one product line.
  • The PARS interface will provide a consistent interface across all Enigma archiving products and operation systems, making the solution suitable for use by the enterprise.
  • Tight integration into LDAP security, already associated with the current PARS product line, provides ease of access management which is suitable for use by the enterprise.
  • The provision of a Web interface, making use of the many advances in browser design and development tools for flexibility and resulting in a familiar and easy to use user interface.

By undertaking this major redevelopment of SmartMove now, we will be able to align the product for the foreseeable future and beyond by including superior flexibility.

Customers buying SmartMove today and remaining on maintenance through this development period will be entitled to:

  • Continued high level of product support and error correction as necessary
  • The right to move to the new PARS Migration product line in the future
